Philly food is so much more than cheesesteaks. Let us show you.
On Saturday, June 9, Urban Outfitters HQ in the Navy Yard will once again host the Great Chefs Event to benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand, albeit with a few changes this year. The event, in an effort to present a more family-friendly, daytime experience, will be held from 12:30p – 4:00p; and if you were looking forward to the VIP after-party, this year you’re out of luck—unless you’re a chef, sponsor, or volunteer.
As in years past, tickets to the event are $250 ($150 of which is tax deductible) and will get you delicious samples from over 40 chefs hand-picked by Marc Vetri. There will also be plenty of drinks to sample, as well as one of the best silent and live auctions at any event.
The chef list, as always, is impressive. In additional to a handful of 2018 James Beard Award finalists—Michael Cimarusti (LA), Evan Funke (LA), Andy Ticer and Michael Hudman (Memphis), and Philly’s own Michael Solomonov—there will be plenty of well-known celebrity chefs in attendance, such as Michelle Bernstein (Miami), Chris Cosentino (San Francisco), Jose Garces (Philly), Alex Guarnaschelli (NYC), and Jonathan Waxman (NYC).
But the list doesn’t stop there! Philadelphia’s Daniel Stern and Greg Vernick are always worth checking out, as are Timon Balloo (Miami), Katsuya Fukushima (DC), some of the best barbecue in the country from Adam Perry Lang (LA), and amazing salumi from Cesare Casella (NYC). A full list of chefs in attendance can be found on the Great Chefs Event website.
More important, perhaps, than all the great food you’ll get is the good you will help do. Proceeds benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand, which helps to raise awareness and funds to help in the fight against childhood cancer—the event, so far, has raised over $800,000 for the cause and inspired similar events in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. More information can be found at AlexsLemonade.org.
If you want to buy tickets (and I know you do), they can be found on the Great Chefs Event page. They are also still looking for sponsors, for which you can find information on the page as well. The ticket price may seem steep, but the value you receive (and that others will receive through the benefits to the foundation) is well worth the price. Treat yourself, do some good, and I hope to see you there.
