Philly food is so much more than cheesesteaks. Let us show you.
During our time writing In Search of Beer, Philly Beer Week was a big time of the year for us. We’d always use the two weeks leading up to the event to highlight all of our favorite events in specific categories, and had a lot of fun hyping ourselves (and hopefully others) for the 10 days of drinking in Philadelphia. Now, we care more about the food, but still recognize Beer Week as a time when our local bars and restaurants can still be highlighted. So, if you’re not much into drinking, there will still be events for you. For starters, let’s go with Philadelphia’s favorite meal: brunch.
Morning Wood Beer Brunch | The Grey Lodge | Saturday, June 4 | 10a – 2p | $PAYG
A Grey Lodge tradition, and a great way to kick off Beer Week. The name derives from the large amount of wood-aged beers they’ll be pairing with their brunch specials, so if that’s what you’re into (and why wouldn’t you be?), this is the event for you. Beers such as Flying Fish Bourbon Barrel Aged Sour ESB, Troegs Bourbon Barrel Troegenator, and Yards Barrel Aged Old Bart (along with bottles of Founders KBS while they last) will be available with a sausage sandwich with smoked slaw, smoked duck confit tostadas, and a breakfast sandwich with fire roasted peppers, smoked cheddar, and smoked paprika aioli.
Rock & Roll Brunch | Bottle Bar East | Sunday, June 5 | 10:30a – 12a | $PAYG
As a Clevelander, I would be remiss to leave out an event that features Great Lakes and Fat Head’s breweries. They will both have beers on tap at the brunch, and the DJ will be spinning hits from the 2016 Rock N Roll Hall of Fame inductees. Be sure to also check out brunch specials like Turntable Gazpacho, a Croque Madame with Holy Moses cheese sauce, Bumbleberry French toast, and IPA crab cakes with Headhunter hollandaise!
Sour Brunch | Standard Tap | Saturday, June 11 | 11a – 3p | $PAYG
It wouldn’t be Philly Beer Week without the Sour Brunch from Standard Tap, and we’re glad they’re sticking by this stalwart. We haven’t received much information yet, but as long as the event lives up to past years, it will be worth swinging by for some sour beer and brunch fare. Keep it on the radar, and we’ll update as soon as we learn anything else. UPDATE: Philly Tap Finder has the tap list!
Extreme Beer Brunch | South Philly Tap Room | Sunday, June 12 | 11a – 3p | $PAYG
If you want to end Philly Beer Week with a bang, this is the best way to do it: get all your big, beefy beers while still putting some food in your stomach so you don’t have to end the week early. SPTR’s awesome brunch menu will stay the same, but you’ll be able to get at least 3 Russian Rivers (Temptation, Supplication, and Consecration), a rare sour Allagash, Firestone Walker’s 2015 Sucaba, vintage KBS, a sour vintage Nodding Head, and a few more beers the bar isn’t at the liberty to divulge just yet. Sounds like a fitting end to Beer Week to us.
