Philly food is so much more than cheesesteaks. Let us show you.

Philly Chefs Represent in James Beard Semifinal

Beard-AwardsPhilly has been making multiple best-of lists lately, whether they’re about where to spend your summer vacation or the best beer cities in America.  But once again, we’ve proven that we’re no slouch in the food department, either, with the latest announcement of the James Beard Awards semifinalists.  These semifinalists will be sent to a group of over 600 judges to be whittled down to five finalists in each category—announced March 15—and then re-voted on to announce a winner at the James Beard Awards Gala on May 2.

Here’s where Philly is representing:

Outstanding Baker
Andre Chin and Amanda Eap – Artisan Boulanger Patissier

Outstanding Bar Program
The Olde Bar
Tired Hands Fermenteria (Ardmore)

Outstanding Chef
Michael Solomonov – Zahav
Marc Vetri – Vetri

Outstanding Pastry Chef
Kate Jacoby – Vedge

Outstanding Restaurant
Fork

Outstanding Restaurateur
Stephen Starr

Outstanding Service
Zahav

Rising Star Chef of the Year
Alex Bois – High Street on Market

Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic
Joe Cicala – Le Virtu
Eli Kulp – Fork
Rich Landau – Vedge
Konstantinos Pitsillides – Kanella South
Greg Vernick – Vernick Food & Drink

Some of these come as no surprise—Mike Solomonov and Zahav earn every nomination they receive and then some.  But the fact that Rich Landau and Kate Jacoby are both up for awards while being completely vegan chefs really speaks to the level of quality vegan food has in Philadelphia.  2016 was recently named the year of the vegan in Philadelphia, and this only goes to reinforce that.  But it also reinforces that we’ve got some great chefs and restauranteurs who can represent across a broad spectrum of categories—which means we’ve all got some eating to do.
